PROS

  • INSULATION - Because there is space between the two layers through the cell technology, the heat gets trapped inside the cell before coming into the house. Therefore they are a great insulation tool.

  • DARKNESS : Great for room darkening because they only have a small light gap.

  • VIEW: This window treatment is great for your view, because you can easily completely raise them easily.

  • PRIVACY: These can be installed with a bottom up and top down feature, allowing for maximum privacy and light at the same time.

CONS

  • AIRFLOW: These don’t rank well for airflow since they either have to be up or down to allow air in unobstructed. However airflow is still available for example if you bring the top down. Expert tip: if your window opens vertically and your window treatments are horizontal then the back of them will get dirty quickly.

  • CLEANING: Cell shades can be professionally cleaned in an ultrasonic machine. Or you can spot clean them with warm water and a cloth or little bit of Wollite. They are fabric so they will get dirty over time.

CELL SHADES RATING

Rating: 5 is the highest score and 0 is the lowest.

Cell shades are a great option for spaces where you would like privacy and lighting at the same time; for example: in your dining room, bathroom, and front of the house windows. We also recommend shade cell window treatments for windows that get direct lighting from the sun, to assist with temperature control of the room. The cell shades help absorb heat and can aid in keeping your rooms cool during the hot summer months. Cell shades are also nice paired with another window treatment to increase your options. For example you can use the sheer cell shades in conjunction with drapes to have a lighting with privacy and completely black out a room.

Opacity Variations Available with Cell Shades

Which is the right option for you?

There are three levels of opacity in cell shades. First is Sheer, which is great to be able to look outside, and still have a level of privacy. Next is Light Filtering, which is has less opacity than sheer, but still allows light to filter in. This opacity give you more privacy as well. Lastly, there is Room Darkening or Black Out material. This has no opacity and blocks out the light, creating a dark space great for sleeping or watching movies in.

The different levels of opacity are available due to the material they are made out of, and the number of layers inside the cells themselves. For example, in the Room Darkening cell shades, there is a metal like material that completely blocks the light from passing through the cell. There are also different sizes of cells, some produce a “blinds” look, and some give a different esthetic feel with about 2 inch cells. There are available in a wide array of colors and fabric textures.
